Mentoring into the Millenium

The Piute Middle School Peer Assistance Leaders (P.A.L.S) is in its third decade of mentoring students in grades one through eight. The program has grown from a dedicated twelve students who lead weekly preventative guidance sessions in seventh grade classes to an equally dedicated fifty students who author and conduct a variety of programs designed to enhance the character of elementary students.

P.A.L.S program strategies include multimedia presentations including puppets, role-plays, testimonials, and audiovisual displays. The P.A.L.S program has received recognition at the state and national levels.

  • Recipient of the Cable Broadcaster's Crystal Award for the Public Service announcement "Don't Be a Clown: Say Yes to Life" aired on CNN, ESPN, and Nickelodeon
  • Featured in the BBC television series "The Teen Species" on The Learning Channel
  • Awarded Exemplary Middle School Peer Helping Program of the year 2000 by the California Association of Peer Programs
  • Presentations at the majority of N.P.H.A. annual conferences throughout the country including the Keynote General Session of the 2001 Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri
  • Presentations at the majority of C.A.P.P. State Annual Conferences in California
  • Featured on Los Angeles television channels KCET and KNBC (Channel 4)
